2023 Camp Igaliq with Kawerak Wellness
Camp Dates: August 8th – 10th, 2023

Application Deadline is Friday, July 14, 2023

Camp Igaliq is an opportunity for youth ages 14-18 to gather in an outdoor setting to learn a variety of skills, participate in activities, meet other youth from the region, and work with Kawerak Wellness and Mentors. Camp Igaliq will take place outside of Nome from August 8th through August 10th, 2023.

How to Apply

  • Download and complete the 2023 Igaliq Application
  • Participants will be selected based on a variety of factors; not first come first serve. However, you are encouraged to get your application in ASAP.
  • You will be notified by July 26, 2023, of your application status and receive additional camp and flight information if accepted.
  • All application materials must be returned to Kawerak Wellness by July 14, 2023 July 24, 2023 by end of business (4:30pm). You can fax to 844-964-0128 or email zokleasik@kawerak.org.
Camp Details
  • Campers will fly to Nome on August 7 and return home on August 11.
  • All travel, food and lodging will be provided by Kawerak Wellness Program.
  • There is no cell service at camp, but we will have a satellite phone in case of an emergency.
  • If you have a family emergency while your child is at camp, you will be able to contact Kawerak’s front desk at 907-443-5231 and they will relay the information out to camp.

Camp Igaliq

Each summer youth from Nome and the Bering Strait region travel together for 5 days to create a bright vision of themselves, their community and their future. Elders and guest presenters share knowledge of land, skills, stories, education, employment, suicide prevention and healthy relationships. Hiking, swimming, canoeing, dancing and healing, Camp Igaliq is an exciting time to share, build, and connect.

Eligibility:

Youth should be tribally enrolled,  age 14-18, and do not have to be enrolled in school in order to attend.

Talking Circles

Kawerak Wellness is assisting groups with hosting talking circles for healing among youth, women and men. Stay tuned for upcoming circles. If you would like assistance arranging a virtual talking circle in your community, please contact Kawerak Wellness at 443-4393.

What is a Talking Circle?

Youth Leaders

Youth leaders are chosen by their peers as someone they can talk to. Each year more than 50 youth attend a two-­‐day training to learn skills in intervening to create a safe environment, suicide prevention, healthy relationships, being a leader and role model. YL recognize their ability to create a positive culture in their school. YL plan events, ranging from prevention and awareness campaigns and activities to helping elders and the community.

Regional Wellness Forum

Goal: “To Provide a Collaborative Forum to Seek and Coordinate Resources to Advance Wellness in the Bering Strait Region”. Quarterly meetings held with community partners.

Story and Skill Sharing

Brings youth, elders, and others together in community and classrooms.

Media Outreach

PSAs to highlight safety, activities and achievements. Check out the Camp Igaliq DVD, and Kawerak Facebook Page.

Safety Patrol

Since 2004, more than 65 volunteers partner during New Year’s, Iditarod, and PFDs to keep our community safe.

School and Community Gatherings and Workshops

In Nome and 15 sites, Anvil Mountain Correctional Center, Nome Youth Facility, and Seaside.

Walk for Life

Annual celebration to support suicide prevention and community wellness.
