HAZWOPER / Oil Spill Response Training

Kawerak, Inc., US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US Coast Guard (USCG), and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) are pleased to offer an oil spill response training course with Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Refresher incorporated into the course, to Alaska Native communities located in the Kawerak Region. This 3-day training is free to participants, thanks to the collaborative efforts of those noted here and the financial support of the EPA Alaska Operations Office and EPA Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. Any travel, per diem, and lodging costs are the responsibility of the entity sending the student to the course. Travel scholarships are now available to reimburse participants for lodging and airfare up to $1000!

Eligibility

This course is typically given to personnel that act as first responders to hazardous substance releases in their community. As such, persons with previous HAZWOPER training are encouraged to attend.  Additionally, those participants that have current HAZWOPER certification will receive an 8-hour refresher certificate.

This response course requires no pre-requisite training and is open to all. All community leaders and other decision-makers in Alaska Native Villages who are developing response programs or want to become first responders are welcome to apply.

This three-day training course will be delivered 8:30 am – 5:30 pm Tuesday, August 14 through Thursday, August 16, 2018. The training will be held at the Mini Convention Center in Nome, Alaska.

Travel to Nome and Lodging

Participants are required to make their own travel arrangements. Participants should arrange their travel to arrive at the Mini Convention Center before 8:30am on Tuesday, August 14 and depart after 5:30 pm on Thursday, August 16, 2018.
