JOB TITLE: Early Childhood Teacher Trainee
POSITION STATUS: Temp Part-Time
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-exempt
PAY SCALE GRADE: 8T
REPORTS TO: Early Childhood Teacher Trainee Instructor
Trainees will be enrolled into a comprehensive seven (7) to eight (8) month training program that will provide instructional training in early childhood development processes to prepare them to be teachers, teacher aides or child care providers in a birth to three year old or pre-school center or home based setting. Trainees will learn about how to provide healthy learning environments, classroom and group management, and plan age-appropriate learning activities while increasing their workforce development skills and fulfilling the formal educational requirement of obtaining a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITES:
- Will work towards obtaining a CDA credential or equivalency which requires at a minimum 120 hours of instructional training and 480 hours of contact time with children in the age group of the CDA they are obtaining. Will demonstrate their ability to provide the highest level of care for children, by demonstrating understanding of 6 Competency Goals: 1) to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment 2) to advance physical and intellectual competence 3) to support social and emotional development and to provide positive guidance 4) to establish positive and productive relationships with families 5) to ensure a well-run, purposeful program responsible to participant needs 6) to maintain a commitment to professionalism.
- Will complete all requirements to obtain CDA credential or equivalency.
- Will become equipped to provide high level care to children both individually and within group settings.
- Will understand have knowledge of developmental screenings and assessments and how to set goals for children and families.
- Will obtain State of Alaska Food Worker’s Card.
- Will obtain First Aid and Infant/Child (Pediatric) CPR certification.
- Will learn how to implement individual feeding plans or promote family style dining for all meals and snacks served at the center in compliance with the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Infant Feeding Guidelines and parent input.
- Will become familiar with applicable federal and state regulations including the Head Start Program Performance Standards, the Head Start Act, applicable federal and State licensing regulations, the CACFP, and Kawerak’s Head Start policies and procedures.
- Will learn how to follow the prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Standard of Conduct, and Confidentiality policies.
- Will learn how to use positive guidance and teaching strategies consistent with early childhood education practices.
- Will participate in scheduled instructional class sessions with the Early Childhood Teacher Trainee Instructor or meetings, as scheduled.
- Will participate in life skills instructional sessions that will increase workforce development skills.
- Other duties as assigned by the Early Childhood Teacher Trainee Instructor or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED by completion of program.
- Experience working with young children preferred.
- Must maintain a professional attitude, be responsible, dependable, and demonstrate a commitment to excellence.
- Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
- Must be committed to regular and consistent attendance to stay on track with the program.
- Residents of the community given preference.
- This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act AS 47.05.310-47.05.390, 7 AAC 10.900-10.990, and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 USC 3201-3211 (ICPA). A background check clearance is required, including fingerprints, and the employee’s name will be submitted to the Background Check Unit of the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and entered into their central registry. Barrier Crimes Act and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
