JOB TITLE:                   Transportation & Maintenance Specialist

LOCATION:                  Nome

POSITION STATUS:   Regular, Full-time

EXEMPT STATUS:      Non-Exempt

PAY SCALE RANGE   14-15-16-17 ($43.17 – $59.73 DOE)

REPORTS TO:             Transportation Program Director

 

BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in planning, design, construction and maintenance of Kawerak’s Frontier Roads (trails) Program.
  2. Assist the Director and Tribes in the selection, inventory and maintenance of equipment and supplies necessary to maintain village roads and trails.
  3. Operate and maintain Kawerak Transportation Program (KTP) fleet of equipment.
  4. Operate and maintain KTP maintenance shop.
  5. Complete Average Daily Traffic (ADT’s) Counts for villages and update all other required inventory information per 25 CFR Part 170.
  6. Conducts mapping research, in the field and in the office.
  7. Work with Transportation Planners in updating Long Range Transportation Plans, collecting necessary transportation data and verification of inventory submissions.
  8. As requested, assist surveyors and other specialists in surveying projects and engineers in product inspection.
  9. Assist in construction projects as needed to ensure project compliance and inspection and documenting items in GPS (trails, etc.).
  10. Act as Kawerak’s representative for materials, equipment and other maintenance related items in communication with the design engineering staff, vendors, contractors and village.
  11. Coordinate maintenance activities with entities for dust control, route staking and road maintenance activities by scheduling of work and mobilization of materials and equipment.
  12. Train at the local level the use of maintenance equipment and building of trail stakes.
  13. Assist engineers in developing project scopes of work, project cost estimates, project timeline and schedules and materials list.
  14. Provide written and verbal updates and reports to the Tribal Council(s), Engineer(s), and Program Director.
  15. Attend trainings, meetings or workshops as necessary to keep abreast of technological advances in the development of maintenance modes.
  16. Other duties as assigned by Kawerak Transportation Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school, or 4 years of relevant work experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  2. Knowledge in rural maintenance of trail stakes, dust control products and road maintenance activities.
  3. Must be willing to travel by snowmachines, all-terrain vehicles and boats to conduct maintenance work on the ground.
  4. Extensive knowledge and demonstrated skill in the maintenance and repair of light vehicles, ATVs, boats and snowmachines.
  5. Ability to assist Kawerak’s Contract Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
  6. General knowledge of heavy equipment and their functions.
  7. Must have exceptional survival skills for all Alaska seasons.
  8. Must have demonstrated capability of operating in remote environments for extended periods in all seasons.
  9. Computer skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Windows, Excel and Internet skills required.
  10. Strong organizational skills required.
  11. Must be dependable, self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
  12. Must be able to work and communicate effectively in a multi-cultural setting and develop working relationships with various governments, corporations, and funding agencies.
  13. Must be willing and able to travel.
  14. Must possess a valid Alaska Driver’s License and maintain a clean driving record.
  15. Experience in construction and maintenance reporting including daily diaries and progress reports.
