KAWERAK POSITION DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO:                                   Executive Vice President

 

The Vice President of Human Resources for Kawerak, provides strategic leadership and direction to all facets of human resource management.  Directs the management of the various components and functions of Kawerak’s HR department positions ensuring initiatives are integrated and effectively supporting the overall mission, vision, goals and priorities of Kawerak.   Directly supervise the Human Resources staff.

 

Essential Functions

  1. Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the organization’s human resource functions and performance ensuring that services to staff and departments are effective, cohesive, consistent with the needs and objectives of the various Kawerak departments as well as the organization as a whole.
  2. Translates the corporate strategic plans into HR strategic and operational plans. Partners with the leadership team to define the strategic vision of HR and brings that vision to life.
  3. Manages the budget and other financial measures of the HR departments as appropriate.
  4. Evaluates the HR structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as for providing individuals with professional and personal growth opportunities.
  5. Works closely with other Administration programs and staff (Payroll Staff) to ensure a smooth operation and coordination occurs.
  6. Develop staffing and retention strategies and implementation plans and programs to identify talent within and outside the organization for positions of responsibility. Identifies appropriate and effective external sources for candidates and recruitment of hard to fill positions.  Develop and implement a successful onboarding program for Nome, Village, and Remote staff.
  7. Develops progressive and proactive compensation and benefits programs to provide motivation, incentives and rewards for effective performance.
  8. Develops human resource planning models to identify competency, knowledge and talent gaps and develop specific programs to fill the identified gaps. Areas of activity will include talent management through proper succession planning, training and development programs for preparing employees for more significant responsibilities, and general business development programs to enhance employee knowledge and understanding of the company, policies and procedures and other areas that enhance supervisory and management skills. Included in this area would be programs for employee relations, cultural and corporate orientation, sexual harassment, employee complaints, external education and career development, among others.
  9. Manage the human resource information system database and provide necessary reports for critical analyses of HR functions and the people resources of the organization to enhance, develop programing and/or policies and procedures of Kawerak.
  10. Maintains knowledge of HR policies, programs, laws, staff committees and issues. Recommends changes as appropriate.
  11. Provides technical advice and knowledge to others within HR and Administration. Advise and coach employees and managers on employee issues.  Handle all employee relation investigations and oversee a resolution.  Establishes credibility throughout the organization to be an effective listener and problem solver of people issues.
  12. Responsible for the development and implementation of Intern Program within Kawerak.
  13. Manages other areas such as relocation, employee communication, employee safety and health, and community relations. Develop and improve the companies culture of feedback.  Facilitate and innovate an open-door feedback process to make feedback constructive and effective way of life within Kawerak.  As a leader in HR, drive the company’s culture and what makes Kawerak a great place to work.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages all employees of the Human Resources department and is responsible for the performance management of the employees directly under the position.

 

Work Environment

This position is located in Nome, Alaska.  This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.  This position may be required to visit Kawerak facilities and contraction projects.

 

Required Education and Experience

  1. Masters’ degree or equivalent; or 8 to 10 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  2. SHRM-SCP certification or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire. PHR or SPHR preferred but not required.
  3. Experience in strategic planning and implementation. Demonstrated ability to maintain a “big picture” strategic view and to be a problem solver.    Previous experience with workplace safety and compliance programs preferred.
  4. Experience building and managing a team in a diverse organization and departments.
  5. Demonstrate deep and through knowledge of HR functions (recruitment, talent management, etc.), compensation and benefits. Must be confident and an expert in the HR field to offer sound advise and lead Kawerak’s HR direction.
  6. Ability to develop, use metrics and analytics. Ability to identify and secure alternative funding sources. Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  7. Knowledge of employment laws and compliance on state and federal levels.
  8. Effective communication skills – written, verbal, listening and presentation skills.
  9. Well organized with excellent leadership qualities. Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities to lead, plan and manage change.
  10. Proven ability to diagnose problems and drive appropriate solutions.
  11. An ability to build trust and credibility across the company to encourage an open door and open communication environment.
