Kawerak’s Children and Family Services Department is happy to announce Karis Evans as the newest Foster Care Recruiter. This position supports local foster families and assists new ones in the process. The Bering Strait Region has a high need for foster homes. Having local homes is essential for keeping youth connected to their family and culture through a very transitional time.
Karis was born and raised in Nome. She says growing up in Nome has given her a deep connection to the people, families, and communities that make our region so special.
“I was drawn to foster care because I believe every child deserves to feel safe, supported, loved, and connected to their family, community, culture, and traditions,” expressed Karis. “I want to help create more opportunities for children to remain connected to the people and communities they know while supporting families who are willing to open their homes and make a difference in a child’s life.”
As the Foster Care Recruiter, Karis will work with individuals and families who are interested in becoming foster care providers. She can answer questions, explain the licensing process, assist with applications, coordinate fingerprinting and background checks, and help potential foster homes work through the requirements for licensing through the Office of Children’s Services. The ultimate goal is to increase foster homes while making the process as easy as possible for interested families.

Whether you’ve thought about fostering but aren’t sure if it’s right for you, or you have questions about the process, or you just want to learn what foster care looks like – these are great reasons to reach out. There is a need for safe, supportive, and loving foster homes throughout the Bering Strait Region, both in Nome and in our villages. Opening your home can make a lasting difference in a child’s life and help them stay connected to their family, community, culture, and traditions during a time when they need support the most.
