Supportive Services

The Supportive Services Program helps unemployed or underemployed tribal members who have financial barriers and need assistance to secure employment or complete employment objectives. Applicants must be actively seeking employment or completing short-term training and will have a job after the training is completed.

Examples of assistance include, but are not limited to, the following: transportation to and from a training or job site, tools and materials for a job, housing assistance, work and safety essentials, initial union dues, medical examinations, personal appearance and uniforms, glasses, application fees, etc.

Follow-up support may be extended for one month, or as needed, after a client has been employed or continues to need assistant to complete their employment objectives.

The type of supportive services will vary with each participant and will be determined on a case-by-case basis and the applicant’s Individual Employment Plan.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be Alaska Native or American Indian and a member of a federally recognized tribe
  • Must reside in the Bering Strait-Norton Sound region (minimum of one [1] year)
  • Nome Eskimo Community tribal members must apply at their local IRA
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or emancipated youth, at least 16 year old. Exception includes a younger applicant who has graduated from high school or completed the GED, or a youth who has a disability and also receiving state or tribal Vocational Rehabilitation Services.
  • Have not received Direct Employment Assistance before
  • Must show financial need
  • Must meet income guidelines
  • Must not be eligible for services through Direct Employment Assistance, Vocational Training, or Higher Education Scholarships.

Application Process

  1. Complete the Direct Employment and Supportive Services Application
  2. Submit Verification of Tribal Enrollment (see your local IRA)
  3. Complete the Supplemental Information Forms
  4. Submit Employment Verification (if required)
  5. Submit Landlord Verification (if required)

Intake and Case Management

Once the application is complete, the applicant will meet with the case manager to review the application, determine services needed, complete an Individual Employment Plan, participate in comprehensive case management to complete employment goals, and follow-up 90 days after the service are provided.
