Kawerak Inc has been operating a recycling program for regional villages and managing the Nome recycling depot for ten years. The program has had many ‘wins’, like the tons of toxic materials that avoided our landfills, however there are also challenges. The current locations and facilities have to limit the quantity and type of materials accepted, and they don’t provide a sheltered, safe place for employees to work.

Kawerak has partnered with Zender Environmental Health and Research Group to assist with finding community-based solutions. In the coming months, Zender Group will be reaching out to villages, tribes and members of the Nome community to find out what you think. Through community meetings, online surveys, individual interviews and Facebook polls, your feedback will be collected and used to shape the future.
