Recycling in Nome – What’s in Now, What’s the Future?
For the past ten years Kawerak Inc has operated a recycling program for regional villages and managed the Nome recycling depot. There has been many successes of the program, including the thousands of pounds of hazardous and toxic materials that were collected and shipped out so they stay out of our landfills. But is this enough? There are also still many challenges – the current locations and facilities limit the quantity and type of materials accepted, and they don’t provide a sheltered, safe place for employees to work.
Kawerak has joined with Zender Environmental Health and Research Group to assist with coming up with community-driven and focused solutions that can work for our region. In the coming months, Zender Group will reach out to villages, tribes and community members to find out what you think. Through community meetings, online surveys, individual interviews and Facebook polls, your feedback will be collected and used to shape the future.
If you don’t have time to join us, please participate in our survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XKXVTLP . Your feedback is critical to our collective success!
