Kawerak College Transition Program

Kawerak College Transition Program exists to assist new freshman from the Bering Strait region in settling into college successfully with a focus on in-state universities.

What the program offers: 

  • Pays for airfare to and from your home community to the city your college is located for the first semester.
  • Gives $500 stipend to purchase items needed for college (ie. books, supplies, personal items).
  • Guidance to navigate starting college and resources.
  • A Kawerak staff member escorts you to campus, helps get you set up in the dorms and shop for supplies.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating high-school senior.
  • Must apply for and complete the Kawerak Higher Education Scholarship by the June 30th deadline. College Transition Program participants will not be eligible for the program if they do not qualify and receive the Kawerak Higher Education Scholarship.
  • Must be a tribal member of a Bering Strait region tribe in Kawerak’s consortium. (Nome Eskimo Community tribal members are not eligible.)
  • Must be attending University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).

College Transition Program Application Process

  • Complete and submit the College Transition Program Application online by the deadline.
  • Complete and submit the MyCache scholarship common application and the Kawerak eligibility form in the MyCache application portal by the fall semester deadline.
    • Deadline for Fall Semester June 30.
