Project Remote

Project REMOTE offers the opportunity for tribal members living in the region to pursue their educational goals in their home without leaving their community, family, or subsistence lifestyles.

Project REMOTE will assist in the following ways:

  • Enrolled distance learners may be given a computer and software upon enrollment depending on need an eligibility
  • Students will receive paid internet fees

Eligible Students

  • Higher Education students taking online classes,  Adult Education (GED) students, Current Employment & Training participants wanting to take online training courses, High School/Home School student seeking dual credit opportunities, and Adults age 50+ as Lifelong Learners!
  • Are Tribal Members who live in communities in the Bering Strait Region

Higher Education Students 

Higher education students accepted into a higher education institution can receive internet fees and technology so they can take virtual distance-learning classes from their home community. Students must be tribal members and reside in the Bering Strait Region. To find out more about the Higher Education Program visit kawerak.org/he.

To receive Project REMOTE support students must:

Adult Education (AE) Learners for GED

Students will need to study a minimum of twenty hours monthly on AE Online approved program platforms. Eligible students are those who live in communities outside of Nome, except for students who verifiably cannot make it into the Kawerak office due to current circumstances- and will be reviewed by staff on a case by case basis. AE students are required to be fully enrolled in Kawerak’s AE Program and engaged in their learning. To learn more about Kawerak’s Adult Education & GED program visit kawerak.org/ged.

To receive Project REMOTE support students must:

Short Term Regional Training & Vocational Training

Trainees enrolled and accepted into the Short Term Regional Training or Vocational Training Program can receive internet fees and technology so they can take virtual distance-learning trainings from their home community. Students must be tribal members and reside in the Bering Strait Region. To find out more about the Short Term Regional Training Program visit kawerak.org/training. or for more information about the Vocational Training Program visit kawerak.org/vta.

To receive Project REMOTE support students must:

Adult Lifelong Learners

Adult learners, age 50+, who are tribal members living in the Bering Strait Region and wanting to take a class/classes online to learn about anything of personal interest and development to improve skills, competence or general knowledge, are able to receive computer, software and internet in order to pursue online education. PLEASE NOTE – APPLICATIONS HAVE CLOSED FOR THIS PROGRAM AS OF 8/15/23 (Exceptions – residents of Diomede are still eligible to apply, or individuals who have received an exception. If you want to inquire about an exception please contact Katie Bourdon at 907-443-4460 or kbourdon@kawerak.org). The program is unique to Project Remote.

Dual Credit for High School and Home School Students

High school or homeschooled students enrolled in dual credit distance education courses can utilize Project REMOTE to cover tuition and cost of materials. These are courses that are not offered at the student’s local high school and are not face-to-face, but will assist the student in making up credits, taking higher-level classes, or helping the student get into college or choice. Examples: calculus, foreign language, or cultural/traditional courses. All dual-credit courses taken by high school students will need to be approved by their high school counselor. Students who need a computer and internet to complete the course will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If granted, students will receive a gift of a computer and internet access covered for the course duration. The program is unique to Project Remote.
