JOB TITLE:                                Pilgrim Hot Springs Agricultural Laborer

POSITION STATUS:                 Part-time, Temporary

REPORTS TO:                           PHS Farm Manager

 

The Pilgrim Hot Springs (PHS) Agricultural Laborer will report to the PHS Farm Manager. The Agricultural Laborer’s responsibilities are to assist with garden maintenance and farm projects taking place from the beginning of the growing season in April, till harvest in late September.

 

The Agricultural Laborer will carry out their job duties to the best of their ability and to do so within the guidelines set forth by Kawerak, Inc., and within the laws of the State of Alaska. The Agricultural Laborer, in executing their duties, will do so in a manner that will protect Unaatuq, LLC. and the Pilgrim Hot Springs land for future generations.

 

Location notes: Mid-May through early June the work will be in town and focused on maintaining and watering seed starts. Early June through late September the work will be onsite at Pilgrim Hot Springs, with occasional work during harvest time in town, or in the region, for produce packaging, delivery, and market events.

 

BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Assists PHS Farm Manager with manual labor and garden maintenance duties.
  1. Maintains a safe working environment keeping the work site clean and orderly.
  1. Receives training necessary for work duties as designated by program staff.
  2. Participates in meetings, as needed.
  3. Primary work will be garden preparation, maintenance, and harvest. Agricultural Laborer is expected to help with bed preparation, adding soil amendments, planting starts and direct seed, irrigation activities, creating compost, placing mulch, weeding, harvesting, produce washing, vegetable preparation and distribution, farm cleanup, farm opening and shutdown, brush cutting, lawn mowing, infrastructure building, shoveling, raking, and manual labor.
  4. The Agricultural Laborer is expected to operate equipment such as tractors, rototillers, hay rakes, planting equipment, tillage equipment, harvest equipment, hay mowers, rakes, and bailers, chainsaws, weed whackers, lawn mowers, power tools, power saws, generators, irrigation pumps, as well as other farm equipment.
  5. Possible travel to regional villages to assist with produce delivery and market stands.
  6. Other duties as assigned by the environmental staff and/or supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  2. Becomes familiar with and follows safety protocols.
  1. Having a valid Alaska driver’s license and a safe driving record is preferred, however we may have employment options for non-drivers.
  1. Must be dependable, self-motivated, and able to work with minimum supervision.
