Koyuk Native Corp Tank Farm

History:

The Koyuk Native Corporation owned this tank farm. It has not been in service since 2005 when the new consolidated tank farm was constructed. It is an active Contaminated Site (File ID 610.38.003) due to petroleum contamination. It consisted of three vertical tanks (which have been removed) and two horizontal tanks. The horizontal tanks are situated on black plastic directly on the ground and the plastic was torn in multiple places.. The site is located 250 feet from the Koyuk River.

Concerns:

In 2018 DEC sent a letter to the Koyuk Native Corporation stating that there is still contaminants on the site and that it is listed as so.  However, the Koyuk Native Corporation cannot afford to perform the clean up on the site.  There is also concern that since it is only a couple hundred feet from the Koyuk River that some of the contaminants may be leaching into the water and surrounding soil.

Actions:

4/2022: Kawerak Environmental Program Manager met with Koyuk Council and tribal members to determine which site was top priority for the community.   It was determined at that time to pursue the clean-up of the former Koyuk Native Corporation Tank Farm site.

5/2022:  Kawerak Brownfield Program submitted an Eligibility Worksheet to EPA for approval   for conducting a Phase I and Phase II assessment and testing for contaminants

6/2022: Kawerak Brownfield staff conducted a site visit

10/2022: ESA Phase I Completed

6/2023: Kawerak Brownfield staff, contractor and ChemTrack Laboratories staff conducted ESA-Phase II testing.

Upcoming:

10/2023: ESA Phase II Assessment Report complete

7/2024: Cleanup & Reuse
