Residents in Nome walked together in unity under sunny skies for the Annual Walk for Life on Friday June 9, hosted by Kawerak Wellness. The walk started off with an invigorating welcome performed by the Nome St. Lawrence Island Dancers. The beat of the drums vibrated positive energy across Anvil City Square to onlookers and passers-by.

Following the final invitational, the participants started their travels, down Bering to 5th Avenue, wrapping around Steadman and Front Street to return to Anvil City Square. During the walk upbeat music blared down the street thanks to deejay Andrea Irrigoo. Walkers of all ages passed out tissue paper flowers to people walking, in vehicles and even while doing Haz-Mat training! The gift served as a small reminder to everyone that they are supported and cared for. Sometimes even the smallest gestures can make a difference in someone’s life larger than we can imagine.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to celebrate each other and demonstrate the strength of our community through this walk. And quyaana to those who do this everyday whether in their work, with their families, friends or strangers. Together, together, together, we are strong.
