Check out the findings from the Arctic Watch Marine Traffic Workshop 2024. Tribal delegates from across the Bering Strait region attended the workshop in Juneau to shape a marine vessel traffic management system for the Bering Strait waterway. Key overarching themes emerged during the workshop, including:

  • The importance of robust involvement, engagement, positive relationships, and local capacity to respond to accidents and natural disasters, and capacity build-out with and for communities in the design of such an Arctic Watch system;
  • The need for extensive, robust, and transparent multi-directional communication between vessels, communities, and an Arctic Watch system;
  • The critical value of Indigenous, Local, and Traditional Knowledge to such a system; and
  • The paramount importance of protecting subsistence and the environment.
