Kawerak would like to extend a sincere thank you to Rasmuson Foundation for their generous support of our Head Start program and families! Rasmuson recently awarded Kawerak Head Start $261,055 to help modernize and expand the Head Start building in Nome.

Previously, Kawerak’s Nome Head Start building supported only four classrooms, and there was an obvious need for more. Kawerak Inc. then purchased the building from the City of Nome, and set forth with their expansion project starting in May 2018. The work remained challenging to continue services and relocate, but the 5th Avenue location was up and running in a few weeks. Work started immediately with hammers swinging and walls coming down as soon as classrooms were emptied.

The construction plan for the building includes the addition of two classrooms, upgrading to be ADA compliant, and needed renovations in the kitchen and existing classrooms. These updates will allow more children to be served in an environment appropriate for the needs of the programs. The plan is to move back into the newly renovated building during the summer of 2019.  Announcements for our Open House are expected to be out this summer.

Kawerak’s Head Start, Early Head Start and Early Head Start/Child Care are pre-school and infant/toddler programs that promote social competence and structure among birth to four year old children in the Bering Strait region. Strong parental involvement, health and social services are primary components of Head Start’s well-rounded program.  Alaska Native language immersion and cultural programming are also of top priority within service delivery at Kawerak Head Start.

Kawerak Head Start Mission: To open doors of opportunity for children by providing comprehensive, quality family-centered services to eligible Head Start families.
