The Kawerak Energy Program is hosting the 2019 Bering Strait Regional Energy Summit, May 7-9 in Nome. Regional residents, stakeholders and partner organizations are invited to come together to learn about energy resources. Attendees will share experiences with energy in their communities, gain knowledge about new energy technologies and funding sources, and help to develop creative ideas for decreasing the cost of energy in the Bering Strait Region by developing efficient, affordable, and sustainable energy projects.
The Bering Strait Regional Energy Summit is geared towards power plant operators, city officials, tribal council officers, native corporation board members, local utility managers, and any concerned citizens interested in energy in our region.
As part of the first day of the summit, a regional energy steering committee will launch, creating a leadership team with an energy vision, specific goals and a mission to steer the overall direction of energy planning in the region towards a sustainable future.
During the summit week, energy educators from Renewable Energy Alaska Project look forward to sharing useful information to summit attendees, as well as school students, families and the community to bring the excitement of energy education to everyone. Outside of the summit workshops all are invited to attend a Community Energy Fair, to be held the last day of the summit. The date and time is TBA, but the public is encouraged to come to this free event to learn about energy, get tips on how to save money on home heating and electricity bills, and enter to win exciting door prizes.
On Friday, May 10, additional workshops will be offered include a Strategic Energy Management Workshop hosted by ANEEE, sponsored by REAP & AHFC, as well as a one-day Grant Writing Course from Meredith Noble of SenecaWorks: www.learngrantwriting.org
Through generous funding provided through a Department of Energy, Office of Indian Energy, Technical Assistance Program grant, Kawerak’s Energy Program is able to bring various energy experts and skilled contractors to the summit, to share their knowledge with the region and help communities with priority energy projects. In addition the funding will allow for travel scholarships to regional residents to attend the summit.
Kawerak’s Energy Program hopes to have representation from each of the twenty communities within Kawerak’s tribal consortium. With limited travel scholarships available, interested participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Download the registration form: BSRES Registration.
