Alaska Head Start Association hosts awards for Head Start programs across the state each year. In 2018, Kawerak’s Nome Head Start Director Deb Trowbridge was nominated and selected as Head Start Director of the Year. This award celebrates the outstanding leadership and program direction of a Head Start Director.

Deb took on the role of director in 2015 after the previous director left. Deb wanted to be fully prepared for this leadership role, as she knew it was vital to the success of the program and the team of Head Start employees.  She took classes, asked hard questions, researched, spend long days and nights finding solutions, and most importantly she relies on a team approach. Deb manages not only the Nome Head Start, but all the Head Start programs across the region including locations in Brevig Mission, Elim, Gambell, Golovin, Koyuk, Saint Michael, Shaktoolik, Shishmaref, Teller and White Mountain.

Rebecca Callahan, Kawerak Head Start’s Child Development Service Manager states, “Deb is always very thorough in making sure we make the best possible decisions when it comes to children’s safety and education. She is always willing to listen to her coworkers and takes everybody’s opinions into account, and very much welcomes teamwork; a quality that makes a good Director.”

We are very proud to have Deb at the helm of our regional Head Start programs, and appreciate her dedication to her role and the families we serve.
