Direct Employment Assistance
The Kawerak Employment Assistance (DEA) Program provides a one-time grant to eligible tribal members who reside in the Bering Strait-Norton Sound region who are transitioning to new or full-time employment. Direct Employment Assistance provides funds for start-up living expenses and employment-related needs necessary to secure employment and become self-sufficient.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be Alaska Native or American Indian and a member of a federally recognized tribe
- Must reside in the Bering Strait-Norton Sound region (minimum of one [1] year)
- Nome Eskimo Community tribal members must apply at their local IRA
- Must be unemployed for 3 months prior to application submission or underemployed (economically disadvantaged)
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have obtained a regular full-time job, 3 months or longer at 37.5 hours a week
- Have not received Direct Employment Assistance before
- Must demonstrate necessity for financial need
- Must apply for assistance before the 1st paycheck is received
Application Process
- Complete the Employment and Supportive Services Application
- Submit Verification of Tribal Enrollment (see your local IRA)
- Submit a copy of your State Birth Certificate
- Submit a copy of your Social Security Card
- Complete the Supplemental Information Forms
- Submit Employment Verification
- Submit Landlord Verification
Intake and Case Management
Once the application is complete, the applicant will meet with the case manager t to review the application, determine services needed, complete an Individual Education or Employment Plan, and participate in a follow-up meeting 90 days after the service was provided.
