Work Services for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Recipients
Kawerak Native Employment Work Services (KNEWS) partners with the Division of Public Assistance to provide services to the villages in the Bering Strait Region. Because there is a shortage of paid positions in our village communities, KNEWS works with local organizations to provide volunteer work opportunities for clients to gain job skills, improve work habits, and provide useful assistance to the organizations in your communities. Your volunteer efforts provide services to better your work skills, your family’s well being, and your community.
Each client will:
- Complete a KNEWS intake assessment to identify the client’s background, education, barriers to work, skills, talents, and interests.
- Complete a Placement Agreement to volunteer at an organization. Work activities will be useful and have a purpose.
- Gain job skills and improve work habits.
- Develop employability by identifying barriers to success, creating a plan to overcome them, developing interviewing skills, creating a resume, and learning job searching skills.
Each worksite will:
- Sign a current Site Agreement that allows TANF clients to volunteer at your organization.
- Verify participant work activity hours each month by signing the client’s timesheet.
- Provide immediate supervision of the client with support from KNEWS staff.
- Identify work activities and provide training, if needed, for specified job duties to the client.
KNEWS clients have volunteered in classrooms as aides, provided office and janitorial assistance, stocked and cashiered, lead crafting and sewing groups, assisted with Eskimo dance classes, helped with coaching and sports activities, provided Eldercare to local Elders, assisted with grant writing for community projects, and have completed upkeep and repairs to local cemeteries.
