Work Services for Alaska Temporary Assistance Program (ATAP) Recipients
The Kawerak Native Employment Work Services (KNEWS) Program works with the Division of Public Assistance to provide services to ATAP clients in the Bering Strait Region. ATAP clients are required to perform work activities in order to receive their ATAP benefits. The KNEWS Program assists by helping ATAP clients gain valuable work skills at worksites around the region. The program also reviews client timesheets and acknowledges subsistence work activities.
Work activities can be performed at various agencies throughout the region. These agencies, also known as worksites, provide structured work experience. KNEWS coordinates volunteering opportunities with these agencies because there are a lack of jobs in the region. These opportunities assist clients to gain job skills, improve work habits, and provide useful assistance in our communities.
Each client who would like to volunteer at a worksite will:
- Complete a KNEWS intake assessment to identify the client’s background, education, barriers to work, skills, talents, and interests.
- Complete a Placement Agreement to volunteer or receive paid work experience at an organization or agency. Work activities will be useful and have a purpose.
- Gain job skills and improve work habits.
- Develop employability by 1) identifying barriers to success, 2) creating a plan to overcome them, 3) developing interview skills, 4) creating a resume, and 5) learn job search skills.
Each worksite will:
- Sign a current Worksite Agreement that allows ATAP clients to volunteer at the organization.
- Verify client work activity hours each month by signing the client’s timesheet.
- Provide immediate supervision of the client with support from KNEWS staff.
- Identify work activities and provide training if needed.
KNEWS program participants have (for example) volunteered in classrooms as aides, provided office and janitorial assistance, stocked and cashiered at local stores, lead crafting and sewing groups, assisted with Eskimo dance classes, helped with coaching and sports activities, provided Eldercare to local Elders, assisted with grant writing for community projects, and provided upkeep and repairs to local cemeteries.
