2019 marks the 5th Honoring Our Children Event following the collaborative effort of the community to provide a calendar of free healthy activities for kids and families through the Child Abuse Prevention Month of April. Kawerak, Nome Eskimo Community, Nome Community Center, Bering Sea Women’s Group, Bering Wellness, Arctic Native Brotherhood, Rotary Club of Nome City of Nome including Rec Center and Library all hosted events, alongside the support of numerous volunteers and donors.
Throughout the month over 300 kids participated in various activities be it scavenger hunting, golfing, crafting, playing, dancing and overall engaging in the community.
The Honoring Our Children event was started by the Alaska Federation of Natives and First Alaskans Institute in 2014 as a way to celebrate our most precious asset-our children. Each child attending the event received a thank you gift put together by the Katirvik Cultural Center, and Elders received a goody bag.
