At the Student Appreciation Gathering on October 16th at the Fairbanks Event Center and Lounge, Kawerak staff announced that they will be giving all 123 current scholarship students an additional $750 to help with end of semester costs.

Forty (40) students came to enjoy dinner, door prizes and conversation with familiar faces from the region including staff and board members from Kawerak, Bering Straits Foundation, Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation, Sitnasuak, Norton Sound Health Corporation and Nome Eskimo Community. Also, local youth role models Oliver and Wilson Hoogendorn of Nome entertained the students with a storytelling session about their trip up Denali. The laughter echoed off the walls as the young men recounted their journey for the group.

Other event highlights included Cindy and Tom Massie presenting a check to the Bering Straits Foundation to ensure students continue their education. Messages from regional leaders reiterated the importance of fortitude in the students’ education, and returning to the region to bring knowledge and expertise to our communities that will advance us forward.

Students should expect to see the funds out by the 1st of November, and no additional work is needed for it to be put into their accounts. Questions can go to Marilyn Sheldon, Education Development Specialist, at msheldon@kawerak.org or 443-4351.
