“We take care of each other” is a Native value that has been passed on from generation to generation. In line with this value, Kawerak has approved internet payments for all foster families for the months of April and May. We are so grateful for our foster parents, who live up to this value every day by providing a safe and caring home for children. They continue to do so through these stressful times as youth are being asked to school at home, thus relying on parents and guardians to also be teachers.
Former Kawerak Board member and Children and Family Services employee Sharon Sparks noticed the heavy burden the COVID-19 environment placed on foster children and parents. She knew of Kawerak’s Children and Family Services Department, and thought there might be a way for them to help. “My passion has been working for children and families,” Sparks stated. “I like to be a breath of fresh air and help to make a positive difference in the lives of those in need, especially the children.” This led her to suggest that Kawerak could offer assistance with internet costs for foster families. “The outcome would be win-win and make a difference for all,” she concluded.
President Melanie Bahnke received the suggestion and things were put into motion quickly thanks to Child and Family Services Program Director Traci McGarry and Foster Care Recruiter Kirstie Ione. Funds were allocated, Foster families were contacted, and packages were arranged. Foster parents, now foster teachers, will have a bit of a reprieve and don’t have to stress about meeting the increased financial obligations. Now our foster youth have the ability to freely access educational opportunities online, as well as remain connected to their families during this time as OCS is attempting to arrange video calls due to visiting restrictions. Foster parent Jessica Farley reacted “I just got the most delightful surprise…We are so grateful, thank you Kawerak!”
We would like to recognize and thank Sharon for speaking up, and encourage anyone with an idea to make their communities better, stronger, and more supported to reach out to us. You can submit your idea online to kawerak.org/contact or call us at 443-5231. Quyaana Sharon!
