Project REMOTE Brings Education Opportunities Home

Kawerak Inc’s Education, Employment and Support Services Division was recently awarded a 3- year Alaska Native Education Program (ANEP) grant for a ‘Regional Educational Model for Online Technology Engagement Project’ (Project REMOTE).   Each year, approximately $1.2M will support Alaska Native students residing in the Bering Strait region with the opportunity to pursue their educational goals in their home community without leaving their home, family or subsisting lifestyles.

Project REMOTE will provide assistance to adult learners, college students, dual-credit High school students, and regional trainees. The program can offer students and trainees a computer, paid internet fees, and software.

“We have found that regional residents desire to pursue their educational goals, but don’t want to have to leave their life behind,” explains Higher Education Program Director Pamela Cushman. “We are so excited this program will allow students the opportunity to achieve their goals, without having to leave their family, community and the lifestyle that is important to them.”

Services under Project REMOTE are available now. Adult Learners in the GED program and Regional Training students can apply now. My-Cache distance education scholarship recipients will be able to receive reimbursement for internet fees paid already for October through December semester. Assistance for dual-credit and college students are also eligible to start the application process for the spring semester 2022.

Project REMOTE is open to all tribal members living in the Bering Strait region and are enrolled in one of the 574 federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native tribes.
