As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to take a moment to recognize Sierra Aningayou,  a recent trainee who worked hard and challenged herself to get her teacher title in the Early Head Start class room with Kawerak’s Head Start.

Sierra’s start began with earning her GED in 2023. Without knowing what was in store or what direction to go in, Sierra saw Kawerak’s Administrative Assistant Training Program. It was a good start Sierra reflected, “It was my first job, other than doing a summer internship in high school.” In the program, Sierra was placed at Head Start as their Administrative Assistant Trainee.

Excited to learn Sierra said she got a lot out of the internship, and in the end it lead her to her next steps.  “While at the Head Start for the program, I saw a need in the classroom and decided to volunteer and really enjoyed it. I was encouraged to join the Teachers in Training Program (after the administrative assistant training program ended). I was nervous at first as I’ve never really thought of myself as a teacher.” Despite of her nerves Sierra decided to give it a try.

“Through the Teachers in Training Program, I had a lot of support and reassurance about becoming a teacher. This program helped me earn my Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) earlier in April and is one of my biggest accomplishments.” After the program ended and with her CDA just about in hand, Sierra was hired as a teacher. She extends her gratitude for the program and the support she received throughout her training, “Igamsiqanaghhalek” (thank you in St Lawrence Island Yupik).

We extend a hearty congratulations to Sierra for all her accomplishments, and the start of her new career!
