“You belong here. Your path matters. It’s okay if your path changes. Indigenous presence is sovereignty. Keep showing up. Keep learning. Remember laughter is medicine.”
These were the closing remarks provided by Cheryl Ongtowasruk during this year’s keynote address at the MyCache Student Appreciation Dinner. Ongtowasruk is a current MyCache scholarship recipient, pursing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Social Justice from Loyola Marymount University.
On October 15, 2025, over 80 guests enjoyed dinner together to share the trials and triumphs of their educational journey, as well as connect with stories and memories of ‘home’ in the Bering Strait Region. The attendees were graced with traditional dancing performed by a King Island dance group, which can be a rare treat when students are busy with campus life.
The MyCache partnership (BSNC, Kawerak, Nome Eskimo Community, NSEDC, NSHC, and Sitnasuak) of course ensured students and guests were given a special gift – this year they handed out cooler bags to each attendee. In addition, scholarship recipients in attendance were entered into a raffle for more door prizes and mileage tickets on Alaska Air, a prize well treasured!
We acknowledge the hard work students put into their education each year, and really value this time to laugh and enjoy a meal together.
